American Producers: Farming, Clicking, and Feeding America’s Hungry

Not only do American agricultural producers work to provide a safe and reliable food and fiber product to the American economy, they are also working to help those that are less fortunate. One in every ten American’s face hunger – yes, even in this prosperous country we live in. Farm Bureau and other organizations, such as America’s Second Harvest and ConAgra Foods, are working to end hunger. Farm Bureau families continue to fulfill their pledge to stop hunger by donating food items and farm-raised produce through the Harvest for All project headed by the American Farm Bureau Federation’s Young Farmers and Ranchers Committee.

In honor of Hunger Awareness Day, ConAgra Foods, in partnership with America’s Second Harvest, is doing its part to help feed the hungry by the simple click of a mouse. For each click ConAgra Foods will donate $1, the equivalent to four bags of groceries, to America’s hungry.

So please take a moment to be thankful for the safe and reliable food and fiber product grown by our American producers and take this easy step to click to aid in eliminating America’s hungry.

"For each click ConAgra Foods will donate $1, the equivalent to four bags of groceries, to America’s hungry." No kidding? You can get 4 grocery bags full of American grown produce, American raised meat, eggs, and dairy, and American made food products for a $1??? No wonder all of my farmer friends say it's so hard for them to make a living. Thanks for nothing ConAgra.

I think Glen misunderstood the concept. ConAgra will donate $1 towards the purchase of 4 bags of groceries to be given per family. They did not mean you could purchase 4 bags of groceries for $1. The intent is to deliver 4 bags of groceries per family, and your click will give $1 towards this purchase.

Actually, I don't think I misunderstood anything. From the Second Harvest website: "Help hungry families and keep food from going to waste! For every click we receive, ConAgra Foods will donate $1 to provide 4 bags of groceries for hungry families. " I read the statement exactly as it it written...and even if it's unintentionally poor grammar, it's quite misleading. Please don't think I'm against the food bank concept or helping the hungry. Quite the contrary. I focus a great deal of effort into trying to establish a safe, fair, and secure local food system. I will say that I would rather see local efforts bringing locally produced fresh food to these hungry families, rather than the over-processed, prepackaged food that one normally sees being handed out via many food bank efforts. It's a nice dream. Just consider the obscene amount of fresh food wasted in this country due to our ridiculous federal subsidy system and farmers letting crops rot in the field due to uncompetively low prices from foreign producers thanks to free trade...it's shameful. Despite the public relations motivated, feel-good donations to America's Second Harvest, companies like ConAgra, Cargill, ADM, etc. are more a reason for the hunger problem and the extinction of the American farmer than they are a solution to the problem.
