Couldn’t believe what I found

I was dropping my youngest daughter, Victoria, off at preschool the other morning and quickly browsed the information center at the school. (The area where you can pick up free reading material.) I couldn’t believe what I found. A Guide to Veg Living put out by the Farm Sanctuary of Watkins Glen, New York: www.farmsanctuary.org.

My first concern was is teachers at the school teaching the children about vegetarians and vegans? Then I took some time today to explore their website. Now I am more concerned than ever about this organization! We as Young Farmers need to get out and “Put a Face to Agriculture.” If we don’t get out and tell our story, groups like this will be telling it for us. And we certainly don’t want that.

If you don’t know about the "Young Farmer Accurate Ag Book Program," please contact your County Farm Bureau. You can also go to the www.ageducate.org website for materials that will help you educate children about agriculture. Another great program New Hampshire Young Farmers started is the Pen Pal Program with local schools. If you would like information about that program you can contact New Hampshire Farm bureau at www.nhfarmbureau.org. We as Young Farmers have an incredibly huge job ahead of us; don’t be afraid to ask for help, we are all in this together.

Dana....I encountered the same magazine last week. One of our county farm bureau board members also volunteers at the local hospital and found it in the waiting room area. She removed it from view and brought it to our monthly meeting last week. I was shocked to read their propaganda and misinformation. You are correct these types of groups will be telling our story if we do not continue to inform the public and our own industry of their platforms and long term goals.

I have encountered similar problems with what school-age children are being exposed to via media and their teachers. My niece wanted to become a vegetarian because she claims there are too many hormones used in livestock. She also equates that with the obesity epidemic! I can only do so much to refute what she is being exposed to. By the looks of things, we in agriculture have our work cut out for us.

Dana- Here is a conference that Mass Ag in the Classroom is putting on for educators in the Commonwealth. It's called the 7th Annual Growing Minds through Massachusetts Agriculture Conference. It takes place on February 9th in at Baird Middle School in Ludlow, Mass. I wonder if other states have similar conferences. I passed the info on to my bro, who is an elementary school principal and my sister, who is a 5th grade teacher.
