More Misconceptions

The other day I recieved an email from a person that was telling me the dangers of using antibiotics to treat livestock. He said that we have overused anitbiotics to the point that they won't work on viruses. Now, did everyone catch that? Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections, not viruses. I am sure that he had read or heard this somewhere and didn't really know what he was talking about, but just trying to repeat it to me to sound informed.

This is a great example of how important is for us to educate consumers and take opportunities to tell our story.

I don't know where I heard this, but, 67% of antibiotics are used in human medicine, not agriculture. Isn't it interesting that most antibiotic-resistant strains of bacterial infection are contracted at hospitals. I don't know of any farm kids with antibiotic-resistant staph infections!

This misconception is spreading through our country like wild fire right now. It has appeared in my local paper, as well as at a forum I spoke at a few weeks back on Animal Welfare. People need to remember antibiotics are expensive and farmers can NOT afford to misuse them. Farmers do not get reimbursed for the cost of anitbiotics. Also, thanks to modern technology, farmers use fewer antibiotics today than farmers did 30 years ago, and farmers only use antibiotics to treat bacterial infections, they are not used to treat a virus. Good Job Troy of pointing this out!
