The Farmer's Share

There has been a lot of talk lately about the increase in the cost of food. From the last quarter of 2007 to the first quarter of 2008, prices increased 8% according to Farm Bureau's informal marketbasket survey. However, the producers of this food have not been getting any of that increase. Read an excerpt from the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues The Rural Blog, which references Farm Bureau's survey.

I know that from a wholesale fruit and produce standpoint our produce has risen a lot. Banana's for example have jumped in price at the wholesale cost and we have to pass that along to the consumer(s) meaning the grocery stores and the resturants we sell to. I know that our pockets arent being lined because of the increase in food cost. In Maine for example I would guestimate that right now the majority of the produce is coming from the Boston Market(Chelsea). Lettuce is coming from California and with the higher diesel prices now they have to recoup the cost somewhere. We have a broker that buys our produce for us and he gets a piece of the pie too..So, more demand, higher prices. Higher fuel costs, higher prices..but yet consumers are making the same money and farmers are too.
