Animal Rights & Wine Don't Mix

[A Letter to the Editor that will be delivered tomorrow to my local newspaper. I challenge all agricultural leaders to do the same.]

If you like to eat, then please continue reading. In the last few weeks, agriculture has been routinely under attack from groups such as the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and Mercy For Animals (MFA). These groups are corporate, lobbyist organizations that have $100 million dollar budgets aimed at removing meat, dairy and eggs from our dinner tables.

Last week, the HSUS received a $100,000 donation from a winery that supplies the Yellow Tail brand of wine. Most people recognize the Australian made product by the prominently displayed yellow-footed wallaby icon, sometimes mistaken for a kangaroo.

According to a post on Yellow Tails Facebook site, the company decided to direct the $100,000 to HSUS to celebrate animals and for animal rescue. By conducting a simple internet search, Yellow Tail would have surfaced HSUS’ questionable financial records and the fact that HSUS does not own or operate a single animal shelter in the United States.

If they would have continued their search, they would have also found that the organization is led by radical animal activists such as J.P. Goodwin, who is not ashamed to admit his hatred toward agriculture, “My goal is the abolition of all animal agriculture.” Another employee on HSUS’ payroll, Leana Stormont, is currently being investigated for her ties to the terrorist Animal Liberation Front (ALF).

It’s time that we as consumers take a stand for agriculture, and send a clear message to those who financially support groups that work to put farms out of business. If you sell Yellow Tail at your store, I encourage you to remove it from your shelves. If you sell the Yellow Tail brand in your restaurant, I urge you to strike it from your menus. If you purchase Yellow Tail wine on an individual basis, look for an alternative U.S. brand, or better yet a brand made in New York State.

As consumers we have the choice to vote with our wallets. By not purchasing Yellow Tail wine products, we are telling the company to high-tail it back to Australia. We are also telling our local farmers that we appreciate the hard work and long hours that they sacrifice, so that we may enjoy a safe, affordable, and abundant food supply.

It’s your plate. Don’t let someone else decide what you can put on it.

Help us show Yellow Tail that we can make a bigger impact for animals than they can. It shouldn't be hard since only 4% or $4,000 of their money will help shelters. Check out our Facebook Group called "Going Local" to see how we're trying to make a positive impact.

Just wanted to clarify as you seem to have misinfomation on Ms Storm. The so-called Center for Consumer Freedom, a front group for factory farming, the sealing industry, and cockfighting, and other animal abuse interests and a fraudulent, self-enriching non-profit organization, is making more libelous claims. This time the phony front group is attacking Leana Stormont, who has served as a temporary contract attorney for The HSUS for the last two years. Because she attended law school at the University of Iowa and was president of the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund, Ms. Stormont met with federal investigators last week as part of an effort to determine who is responsible for a 2004 incident concerning a research laboratory at the University. CCF conveniently failed to mention that Ms. Stormont condemned violence and illegal activity during her time as a student in Iowa in 2004, a view she still holds today. She said at the time in a published statement: “Neither I, nor the University of Iowa Student Animal Legal Defense Fund, support violence of any kind. . . . As a student of the law, I am bound by its strictures and do not advocate lawlessness.” Ms. Stormont did not testify before the grand jury, but instead spoke with federal investigators at the request of the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Ms. Stormont has been told she is not the subject of any inquiry. The Humane Society of the United States has long condemned illegal activity. The group works with researchers to minimize pain and distress in animal experiments and to develop alternatives to animal testing, and has offered rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of individuals responsible for committing acts of violence against researchers.

Before you make claims that MFA and HSUS's farm animal programs have $100 million budgets, please do some research. According to this article (http://www.vegan.com/blog/2010/02/11/mfas-100-million-can-of-whoop-ass/), it turns out that MFA's budget is $500,000 (a tiny fraction of what you claim they have), and HSUS's actual $120 million budget goes to issues of companion animals, wildlife, dogfighting, puppy mills, fur issues --- NOT just farm animals. If the "Voice of Agriculture" makes such blatant lies as these ones, I don't even want to know what they're lying about when it comes to the food they serve us (well, I guess the undercover videos say it all).

not sure where the author got information pertaining to HSUS and MFA budgets, the $100mil is WAY off. i applaud yellowtail, have always been a big fan, cheap vegan wine... I will continue to purchase and urge for availability. re being pro agriculture... we all need to eat, its just a matter of what we eat and how it got to our plate. surely you can recognize that being against animal agriculture, and being anti agriculture are NOT the same thing. support local & sustainable

Wow, that must have been a heck of a typo. Mercy for Animals's annual budget is $500,000, not $100 million. Get your facts straight.

Thanks for the information about Yellow Tail wine! I applaud their donation to HSUS, will start purchasing their wine and encourage my friends to do the same.
