Latest Round of Ag Literacy Mini-grant Winners Announced
WASHINGTON, D.C., January 31, 2014 – The American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture has awarded 14 mini-grants of up to $500 to communities across the nation. The grants are awarded through the Foundation’s White-Reinhardt Fund for Education program.
The grants are used to fund new projects or expand existing agricultural literacy efforts, and are distributed through county and state Farm Bureaus.
Criteria for selecting winners included: the effectiveness of demonstrating a strong connection between agriculture and education; how effectively the programs encouraged students to learn more about agriculture and the food and fiber industry; and the procedures and timelines expected for accomplishing project goals.
“Working to building awareness, understanding and a positive public perception of agriculture through education is the cornerstone of all of our efforts,” said Julie Tesch, executive director of the Foundation. “Through the mini-grant program we assist Farm Bureau members in developing and providing vital tools for educators in their communities at no charge, which furthers their efforts to help young people in rural and urban America better understand today’s agriculture,” she said.
The White-Reinhardt Fund for Education is a project of the Foundation in cooperation with the American Farm Bureau’s Women’s Leadership Committee. The fund honors two former committee chairwomen, Berta White and Linda Reinhardt, who were trailblazers in early national efforts to expand the outreach of agricultural education and improve agricultural literacy.

|Clark County Farm Bureau, Ill.||“Who Grew My Soup?” project to engage students in grades K-6 in agriculture through hands-on activities.|
|Cook County Farm Bureau, Ill.||“There’s AG on My Plate” presentation to teach elementary students about healthy eating and where food comes from.|
|Crawford County Farm Bureau, Ill.||Books to extend ag literacy for students and teachers (grades pre-K—6) on various topics.|
|Gallatin County Farm Bureau, Mont.||Farm Fair for 4th-grade students and teachers to show where food comes from and enhance understanding of agriculture.|
|Hancock County Farm Bureau, Ill.||Resource kits with information about plants and horticulture for early childhood, elementary and home school teachers.|
|Kendall County Farm Bureau, Ill.||EarthBox gardening systems and curriculum support guides to teach elementary school students about plant science and promote ag literacy.|
|Logan County Farm Bureau, Ky.||Raised beds for an outdoor agricultural classroom for middle school students.|
