Washington Post: Lawmakers Reach Tentative Farm Bill Deal After Months-Long Impasse

The Washington Post quoted Dale Moore, American Farm Bureau’s executive vice president, in an article about the tentative farm bill deal reached on Wednesday. “Reaching an agreement gives farmers and ranchers certainty that a farm bill is getting done and will help them weather the economic storms in their way,” Moore told the Post. “It’s especially important as banks are beginning to look with farmers at the next financial year.”

Farm bankruptcies increased 8% over a 12-month period, with 580 filings from June 2019 to June 2020. A six-month comparison, however, shows the number of new Chapter 12 filings slowing. Several contributing factors are likely at play as farmers struggle to stay afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic.
