The latest children’s book from Feeding Minds Press, the publishing arm of the American Farm Bureau Foundation, offers a look at the various types of boots farmers and ranchers use. Michael Clements shares more.
Clements:Farm Boots is the latest book from the American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture’s
Feeding Minds Press. Author Lisl H. Detlefsen says the book explores all the types of boots used on the farm.
Detlefsen: The book is a celebration of all the footwear we wear for different jobs on a farm. And it's not just one farm, it's many different farms, many different seasons and just really explores what rural life is like particularly growing up on the farm, and a celebration of seasons and all of the good things that come with that.
Clements: Detlefsen explains the idea for the book came from her own experiences on the farm.
Detlefsen: When my first book, Time For Cranberries, came out, I would do school visits and I'd bring my hip boots, which are giant waders, and the kids loved trying them on. Then later, when I was walking through my mudroom and seeing just how many different types of boots my one family has, I thought there's a story here to tell because it's not just the boots we wear on our farm, but for people who are involved with showing animals you have specialized boots. For different types of seasons, you have different types of boots, and I thought that's something kids might really enjoy.
Clements: The book will be available on National Ag Day, March 21, but
preorders are open now.
Detlefsen: It's absolutely available everywhere online. My favorite thing to tell people about where to buy books is independent bookstores. Independent bookstores do such great work in the communities and they're really a vital part of the small communities they are a part of. So, if you can't find it in your independent bookstore, most booksellers will happily order it for you if you ask.
