Farmers and ranchers are always looking for ways to grow their farms, serve their communities, and build a stronger future for the next generation. A big part of that future depends on access to markets.

That’s one reason trade remains so important to agriculture. When farmers have access to customers around the world, it creates opportunities to grow demand for the products we produce here at home. Those opportunities can make a meaningful difference for families working through a tough farm economy.

Trade isn’t just about moving products across borders. It helps ensure farm families can continue producing the food, fiber, and fuel America depends on.

Trade Creates Opportunities for Agriculture

That’s why recent discussions between the United States and China caught farmers’ attention. China has committed to increasing purchases of U.S. agricultural products while restoring market access for products including beef and poultry. Those commitments could create new opportunities for American farmers and ranchers at a time when every market matters.

Of course, farmers have seen trade announcements come and go. We know that announced commitments alone don’t pay the bills. What matters is whether commitments turn into sales and whether those opportunities reach farm families.

Trade helps strengthen local economies in places where agriculture remains the backbone of the community.

American agriculture produces high-quality products that are in demand around the world. When barriers come down and markets open, farmers, rural communities, and consumers around the globe benefit.

Trade Supports Rural Communities

The impact of agricultural trade extends far beyond the farm gate. Every $1 dollar of U.S. farm products sold overseas generates more than $2 in economic activity here at home. That means exports support jobs throughout the supply chain, from processing facilities and transportation networks to equipment dealers and small businesses in rural communities.

Trade helps strengthen local economies in places where agriculture remains the backbone of the community. That’s why Farm Bureau continues advocating for policies that expand market opportunities and ensure farmers have a level playing field when competing around the world. At a time when farmers are facing the toughest economic environment we’ve seen in a generation, we need every tool available to help strengthen farm income and create new opportunities for agriculture.

American farmers and ranchers are ready to compete. We simply need the opportunity to do so. And when we have access to customers around the world, agriculture and our entire country are stronger because of it.
