The USDA will make almost $12 billion available to boost the struggling farm economy. Chad Smith has more on the pending help.
Smith: The
Farmer Bridge Assistance Program will send economic assistance to farmers by the end of February 2026. Adele Flynn, an Ohio farmer who was at the White House ceremony announcing the program, says she was glad to be at the table when the announcement was made.
Flynn: The
margins have definitely been tight the past year, but I think, even more so, the opportunity to go in and speak to this administration about wanting to keep our eye on the ball, on creating strong domestic and trade markets. Most farmers don't want a hand out. We don't want a bail out. We just want to be able to grow our product and sell it for a strong amount.
Smith: Flynn said the overall farm economy is in a significant downturn as farmers try to prepare for 2026.
Flynn: So, the aid package for some just means the difference between planting a crop for this year, and the timing of it is vital as we move into the new year to try to plan out what this next year looks like. It just adds a little bit more stability as we move into this new year, and new planning season.
Smith: Despite the ongoing challenges facing her own farm, Flynn said it was an honor to be invited to the White House for a face-to-face conversation with the President of the United States.
Flynn: I'd say it's hard to put into words what exactly getting that invitation meant. We had the ability to sit at the table and speak with the President, having that opportunity and finding that his cabinet, they have a real interest in American agriculture and farmers.
Smith: Chad Smith, Washington.
